Best window for a first trip: late March–May or mid-September–October. Mild enough for outdoor days; hotels and trains still behave.

Two things ruin that window: crowds and temperature extremes. Skip the peak holiday weeks first. Then prefer weeks that are not freezing or muggy. Put major sights on a weekday when you can.

Skip these crowds

Avoid hardBusy — shift the big sights
HolidaysGolden Week, Labour Day, Spring Festival / ChunyunQingming, Dragon Boat, Mid-Autumn (usually 3 days)
Weekends—Sat–Sun at headline sights (e.g. Great Wall, Forbidden City, Terracotta pits) — much busier than midweek

Hard-no weeks: trains sell out at the 15-day open, famous sights are queues, hotel rates jump. Short festivals and weekends: you can still travel — just do not park your heaviest sight day on them.

Month by month

Typical daytime lows–highs in °C for cities foreigners visit most. Not Harbin ice season or tropical Hainan — those are other calendars. Hangzhou tracks Shanghai closely.

North (Beijing, Xi’an): cold dry winters; summers hot — Xi’an feels dry-hot, Beijing often humid with storms. East (Shanghai): damp winters, sticky summers. Southwest (Chengdu): milder winters, often grey; summer muggy. South (Guilin, Guangzhou): winters often coat-optional; Jun–Aug hot and humid, with Guilin’s spring–early-summer rains.

Default comfort window (Apr–May, mid-Sep–Oct) still holds across these cities. Summer works if you accept heat and humidity and start outdoor days early — not the comfort pick.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to visit China for a first trip?

Late March–May or mid-September–October, off Golden Week, Labour Day, Spring Festival, and the short festivals. Mild weather in the big cities; put headline sights midweek if you can. April and mid-to-late September are the cleanest defaults; October from the 8th is strong.

Should I avoid Golden Week and Labour Day?

Yes. Golden Week (usually 1–7 October) and Labour Day (early May) are hard nos for a first trip — trains, major sights and hotels all jam. Spring Festival / Chunyun is the same. Qingming, Dragon Boat and Mid-Autumn are shorter but still crowded wherever locals day-trip.

Are weekends much busier than weekdays?

Yes at the big ticketed sights — for example the Great Wall, the Forbidden City or the Terracotta Warriors. Even in shoulder season, Saturday–Sunday jump; Tuesday–Thursday is thinner. Save the weekend for neighbourhood walking if your dates allow.

Is summer or winter a bad time?

Both are doable, neither is ideal in most tourist cities. June–August is hot — sticky in Shanghai, Guilin and Guangzhou, dry-hot in Xi'an; December–February is cold in Beijing and Xi'an, damp in Shanghai. Prefer spring or autumn unless your flights force otherwise — and still skip the holiday weeks.
