Does Google Maps Work in China? What to Use Instead (2026)
Google Maps is the wrong tool in mainland China. On hotel Wi-Fi or a local SIM it often will not load at all (eSIM usually fixes that). Even when it opens, the blue dot sits 50–500 metres off — licensed Chinese maps use a different coordinate system — and shop listings and transit are years out of date. A VPN cannot fix the pin.
Use it to research the trip from home. Navigate with Apple Maps or Amap.
What to use instead of Google Maps
You do not need five apps. You need one that uses licensed Chinese data, plus a fallback.

iPhone default: Apple Maps. Inside the mainland it silently switches to AutoNavi / Amap’s licensed map. The interface stays in English, transit works in first-tier cities, and you do not need a VPN. Keep your iPhone region set to home, not China.
Android default — and the power-user pick on iPhone: Amap. This is what you use when you need the metro exit letter, a bus, real-time traffic, or a Chinese address to show a driver. Apple Maps is “Amap lite”; Amap is the full thing.
Baidu Maps is the other local giant. Coverage in smaller cities is excellent. The English is not. Skip it unless you read Chinese.
Uber does not run in mainland China. For a car, book Didi inside Alipay. Amap can hail from the same pin if Alipay is already linked — handy mid-trip, not the airport default.
Set up Amap before you fly
Do this on home Wi-Fi. The App Store and Google Play are unreliable once you land.
- Search Amap, Amap Go, or 高德地图. Publisher should be AutoNavi (Alibaba). Amap Go is the more foreigner-facing build; 高德地图 is the same engine with an English toggle. Either is fine.
- Open it, tap the profile icon (bottom right) → Settings (gear / 设置) → Language (语言) → English. The app restarts. Some menus and voice prompts stay in Chinese — usable, not perfectly bilingual.
- Download offline maps for every city on the trip (Beijing, Xi’an, Shanghai, and so on). Packs are a few hundred MB each.
- Save your hotel and the airport as favourites. Paste the address in Chinese characters from the booking confirmation, not the English marketing name. Drivers and station staff navigate by the Chinese line.
Search in English or pinyin for big stuff — "The Bund", "Terracotta Warriors", "Beijing South Railway Station" — then screenshot the Chinese name. For a specific restaurant or hutong hotel, the Chinese address is the one that resolves.
Apple Maps: download offline areas in the app (iOS) for the same cities. Walking still works if cellular drops in a metro tunnel.
Using it on the ground
- Metro: Amap tells you which exit to take (B2, E, etc.). China’s stations can have a dozen, and the wrong letter is a long walk above ground. Apple Maps is weaker on exit letters — check Amap before you tap out.
- Stations are not cities. Your high-speed rail ticket names a specific station. Beijing has eight. Put Beijing South (北京南站), not “Beijing”, into Amap or the ride-hail.
- No signal: you already downloaded offline maps. Amap’s live bus times need data; the street grid does not.
